Breathing more long-term ground-level-ozone — commonly known as smog — is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
This is true for the 42% of people — more than 137 million — in the United States that live in areas with unhealthy levels of ozone (smog), as found in the “State of the Air” 2020 report by the American Lung Association.
That is a mind-boggling statistic!
EPA’s core mission is to protect human health and the environment. Science demonstrated that to adequately protect human health from smog, the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) standard for ozone needs to be set at 60 ppb. But by not proposing a stronger standard, the EPA is rejecting its core mission of protecting public health.
The science is unequivocal that smog is bad for human health. Breathing smog creates a host of lung and cardiac issues, it cuts lives short and it’s a lung irritant. Children are especially vulnerable because their bodies are still developing, they breathe more rapidly, and they are more likely to be playing outside during high alert days.
Smog is also a powerful asthma trigger. Each year, thousands of children are sent to the emergency room because of smog induced asthma attacks. Asthma is the leading chronic disease in children – according to CDC data, about 5.5 million children in the U.S. have asthma and they miss almost 14 million school days each year.
It is deeply disturbing that an agency charged with protecting public health declare that the current ozone standard is adequate, when it so clearly harms the health of millions of children.
Please join me in telling the EPA that our children deserve better than adequate.
