Ask your state leaders to protect kids' health by committing to electric school buses!

The Issue:
Diesel exhaust contains more than 40 carcinogenic (cancer-causing) contaminants, including arsenic, benzene and formaldehyde. Children riding on diesel buses are exposed to at least 4 times more air pollutants than the general population!

Health Impacts:
Diesel exhaust can cause respiratory illness and trigger asthma attacks. It's also linked to negative impacts on children’s lung growth and academic performance. Children are especially vulnerable to the impacts of diesel pollution because they are still growing, their organs are still forming, and they have higher respiratory rates.

Solution:
There are big savings to electric school buses. Electric school buses save families money in avoided healthcare expenses resulting from cleaner air. And they don't contribute to air pollution, so little lungs breathe easier by avoiding daily exposure to over 40 toxic chemicals.

Our children deserve healthy air while traveling to and from school. Electric school buses protect their health, save money for families and school districts, and they don't contribute to air pollution.

Georgia would benefit from having more electric school buses on the road. I am writing to ask you to support electrification for Georgia's school bus fleets and push for funding to be allocated for electric buses. Diesel exhaust contains more than 40 carcinogenic contaminants, including arsenic, benzene and formaldehyde. Children riding on diesel buses are exposed to at least 4 times more air pollutants than the general population. Diesel exhaust causes respiratory illness and triggers asthma attacks. It's also linked to negative impacts on children’s lung growth and academic performance. Children are especially vulnerable to the impacts of diesel pollution because their lungs are still developing and they have a higher respiratory rate than adults. Despite the health risks of diesel exhaust, 90% of Georgia's school buses still use diesel fuel, and 47% of those buses are more than 15 years old. Older school buses produce the most pollution. Electric school buses have no harmful emissions. Because they protect children's health from diesel air pollution, electric school buses save families money in avoided healthcare expenses. New research shows that if Georgia transitioned all diesel school buses to electric school buses, the state would see over $13 million in annual health benefits. Electric school buses also have lower operational expenses than diesel buses. Schools operating an electric bus save over $100,000 in fuel and maintenance compared to a diesel bus. However, the initial investment for electric buses is prohibitively high for many school districts, especially rural or low-income districts where electric buses would be the most beneficial. State funding through grant or rebate programs would help bridge the funding gap for school districts and ensure all schools have a chance to add electric buses to their fleets. Our children deserve healthy air while traveling to and from school. Electric school buses protect their health, save money for families, school districts, and municipalities, and they don't contribute to air pollution. Please support transitioning Georgia's school bus fleets to electric.
