While we’ve all been adjusting, and re-adjusting, to a multitude of changes these past few months, the EPA has been quietly attacking vital public-health measures during a public-health crisis.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suspended enforcement of critical monitoring and reporting requirements of polluting industries, requirements which were established to protect public health.
They announced the final Safer Affordable Fuel Efficient (SAFE) vehicles rule, which would overturn existing fuel efficiency standards that are more robust and safer for public health.
And they undermined the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, a rule that has been in place since 2011, which limits mercury, lead and other harmful pollutants from power plants.
In a time when the health of our families, loved ones, and communities is a top priority, this is deeply concerning. These moves by the EPA will result in exposing us to more pollution, which means unhealthy air and water.
We know that air pollution damages our health. During this critical time the EPA should be doing all they can to protect our health.
We need to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect public-health during the Coronavirus crisis, not giving out rollbacks to polluters.
