The same dirty air that comes from burning fossil fuels and biomass is both making us sick and causing climate change.

Air pollution damages children before they are born, when they’re toddlers, school children, and teens. It damages their lungs, causes asthma, and affects their learning. For adults, air pollution causes lung problems, heart disease, strokes, dementia, lung and other cancers, and affects diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other conditions. It’s as bad for our health as smoking cigarettes.

Right now, federal funding and policies are being negotiated. All your elected leaders need to hear from you.

Please call or write your elected leaders often (even every day!) to tell them you want clean air, clean energy, and clean transportation. It doesn’t matter what party they are in, they need to hear from us loudly and often. Our form will send a written letter from you to federal and state elected leaders, or you can use the phone numbers for each leader which are listed at the bottom of the form. It includes the President, Vice President, senators, representative, and your governor, state senator, and state representative.

Subject: Healthy Air Is Health Care

Dear Elected Official, Please act now to protect our health and our children’s health, by investing in clean energy and clean transportation and other infrastructure provisions. Air pollution hurts health and causes needless deaths. Greenhouse gases cause climate change, which is already causing hundreds of deaths in the U.S. each year. Both disproportionately affect communities of color and lower income people. Right now, particulate air pollution from fossil fuels causes 13% of all deaths in the U.S. Nitrogen oxide air pollution causes 1.6% of all deaths in the U.S. Ozone also causes many deaths. These deaths are needless, and on average people who die from air pollution die too early, losing 15-20 years of their lives because of air pollution. The health harms and deaths are concentrated in overburdened frontline communities. Air pollution and climate change are especially bad for children. It damages them before they are born until they are teens. It causes premature birth, low birthweight, lung damage, asthma, and affects their ability to learn in school. In addition to needless deaths, air pollution causes lung disease, heart disease, strokes, dementia, and is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and much more. All of these health problems cause increased hospitalizations all across the U.S., including here in the Southeast.. It’s as bad for our health as smoking cigarettes – but we can’t quit air pollution ourselves like we can with cigarettes, we need smart policies to keep the air clean. In addition to the health problems and suffering air pollution causes, it costs us billions and billions, in both health care costs and reduced GDP. NRDC estimates that air pollution costs us over $800 billion each year in the U.S. Air pollution damages worker productivity, increases work absence, and reduces crop yields. Even the stock market goes down on high pollution days in New York City. Every amount spent on reducing air pollution can increase GDP by 100-200 fold. Investing in clean energy and clean transportation will be good for our health, protect our children, prevent needless deaths, and improve the economy with good jobs and increased productivity. It’s a win-win for all of us! Please do everything you can to advance smart policies and funding that will promote health with clean energy and clean transportation. Sincerely,
