Who's on the hook to pay for OpenAI's massive data center? Georgia Power won't say.
OpenAI, the AI company that created ChatGPT, is planning to build a massive data center in Effingham County, Georgia. The data center, named Project Camellia, will use 3.2 gigawatts of energy. That's enough to power nearly half the homes in Georgia.
That energy isn't cheap. Even though OpenAI and Georgia Power claim that Georgia families won't pay for energy costs related to Project Camellia, they have refused to make the contract publicly available. Right now, Georgia families don't know how Georgia Power plans to protect them from costs related to this project. We don't know if the contract makes OpenAI pay if they leave their contract early, or if Georgia families could be on the hook to pay for the energy buildout.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) - the group responsible for regulating Georgia Power - is reviewing the contract between OpenAI and Georgia Power right now. If you want better transparency around data centers, now is the time to speak up! The deadline to submit a comment was just extended to Wednesday, August 26. Submit a comment today and let the PSC know that Georgians deserve real protections from data centers like Project Camellia.
Unfortunately, this form only works for residents of Georgia. If you want to fight for data center transparency in your state, check out other advocacy options on our Data Centers page.
Thank You!
